Tony Esposito, an aging Italian vineyard owner, proposes by mail to Rosabella, a San Francisco waitress, and she accepts, partly because Tony has sent her a photograph of Joe,. his handsome ranch foreman. Roseabella is so upset at finding Tony physically unattractive that on her wedding night she gives herself to Joe. Tony is distraught over his wife's pregnancy, but there is a reconciliation, and the vintner offers to raise the child as his own.
