Singing idol Conrad Birdie meets the clean-cut kids of Sweet Apple on a publicity stunt cooked up by his agents where he is to be shown kissing one of the local girls on the Ed Sullivan TV show prior to his induction into the Army. Problems with a jealous boyfriend, an exasperated father, the agent's meddlesome mother, and a relationship between the two agents all contribute to the story.
